So my roommate is 3 months clean now and I'm trying to learn the language he uses in his recovery program. Yesterday he mentioned both "feening" and "fiending" when talking about his progress. Are these just two ways to spell the same thing or do they mean something different? I want to be supportive but don't want to mix up important terms.

That's really thoughtful of you to learn the recovery terminology to support your roommate! You're right to ask about this - "feening" and "fiending" are actually just different spellings of the same thing. Both refer to that intense craving or desperate need for drugs that people in recovery experience. I learned about this distinction when researching addiction terms at https://unitedrecoveryproject.com/rehab-blog/feening-vs-fiending/ which explains how both spellings are used in recovery communities. "Fiending" is the more traditional spelling, while "feening" has become popular in certain communities and social media
